PRIDE 2021 THEME
Denim & Diamonds
It is with heavy hearts that the Abilene PRIDE Alliance has unanimously decided, given that our community is now at emergency ICU capacity, to cancel all events associated with PRIDE 2021 on September 25th. It would be irresponsible for the Abilene PRIDE Alliance to ignore the effect that the Delta Covid variant is having on the unvaccinated members of the Abilene community. PRIDE is supposed to be a celebration of our lgbt family, but instead, this year PRIDE will have to be a commitment to the safety of our community as a whole.
The board and I want to personally thank each of the many volunteers who have made the experience of assembling Abilene’s first PRIDE event a joyful one. Our planning meetings were the highlight of many of my weeks this year. James and I have enjoyed getting to know each of you and hope that you will bring the same drive, enthusiasm, and experience when we can plan this event safely.
The support that we’ve gained from the community this year and commitment from our allies has sometimes surprised me. The outpouring of love from our community and excitement from people from all backgrounds makes the task of canceling PRIDE 2021, the Parade, and all associated events that much harder.
If there’s one thing I think we’ve learned this year, it is that not only is the LGBT+ community ready to come out in a big way, but there are so many more people in our larger community that are ready for us to do it with open arms. Maybe in 2022, we can give that embrace safely.
I can tell you that our enthusiasm isn’t going anywhere. We are committed now more than ever to making this happen.
Let’s all do our part to get this under control so we can come back stronger and better than ever next year!
Get vaccinated, mask up, with PRIDE and LOVE,
